The Dixson First Grade Moving Up Ceremony, held on June 25, was out of this world. Students, together with their family and friends looking on, celebrated their early educational years as they prepare for what comes next, second grade at the Alex E. Grady Elementary School.

The gathering took place in the gymnasium at what will be their new school next year.

Students processed in, heard some encouraging words and received certificates marking an end of their time at the only school they have known so far.

“Thank you so much first graders. I have seen you grow, and I have seen you skip, dance, jump for joy,” Superintendent Susan Yom said in addressing the students. “I want you to continue to do that as you come to Grady Elementary School. I want you to continue everything you did so well.”

Ms. Yom continued.

“To blur with joy, to be kind, to share and to remember that we care and we love you very much. I wish you all the success next year and we can’t wait to have you at Grady elementary school.”

She also thanked parents and families for their support and partnership, which she said would help their children soar and achieve.

Students entertained the crowd with a special rendition of the original song “Dixson Spirit Way,” led by music teacher Christopher Funke.

One by one each student, class by class, was called up on stage where they received a certificate and had their photo taken with their teacher.

Students patiently returned to their seats and wiggled just a bit with excitement until everyone had an opportunity to get their certificate. Parents also took turns taking photos of their child while they were on stage and cheering everyone on.

“Today we celebrate a year of incredible growth, learning and joy,” Interim Principal Ashley Cruz said. “Our first graders have worked so hard and we are so proud of each and every one one of them. Watching them grow into curios and kind and competent learners has been a true privilege.”

Before students met with their parents, they shared one more song, “I’m Growing Up.”

Outside, as students left the building parents met them with flowers, balloons and hugs of congratulations.
